Carpets and red wine stains may seem like a nightmare to many householders. But there are effective techniques to get rid of red wine stains from your carpet. This article highlights five effective steps to get rid of red wine stains from your carpet.
The most important thing is to act immediately. If you don’t clean up the mess right away, red wine stains may soak right through the carpet’s underlay fibres and make it difficult to remove them. Use these steps to clean your carpet so that it looks new once again.
Step-1 – Bot The Stain, Do Not Rub
Equipment Finance Expert from Credit Capital, Alister Clare says, “As soon as the red wine hits your carpet, you need to grab a paper towel or a plain white cloth and pat the stain without rubbing it. Make sure the cloth is white to prevent any dye from the cloth getting into the carpet. Rubbing the stain will only grind it deeper into the carpet fibres.”
Top Tip: Make sure you pat the edges of the stain first and then the middle. That way you will not push the liquid further out to other areas of the carpet.
Step-2 – Dilute And Continue Blotting
A Water Treatment Expert from Water Distiller, Austin Tanner says, “When the area seems to get dry, pour a little cold water onto the stain and blot it again with the white cloth or towel. This will help lift more of the stain out of the carpet. It is also known that contents like the amount of mineral and salt and even the temperature can affect the cleaning abilities of water.”
Top Tip: If you use hot water to blot the stain, the heat will set the stain. Also, you should not use a hairdryer to dry the carpet.
Step-3 – The Vinegar Or Salt Method
Check your kitchen cupboard and choose one of these methods to remove the stain from your carpet. You will need either salt or white vinegar for this method. Don’t use brown, balsamic, or apple cider vinegar since they can stain the fabric of your carpet.
The Salt Method – The stained area should still be wet from the blotting and diluting in Step-2. You may wet the area with a little cold water if the area seems to be too dry. There should be moisture in the stain for the salt method to work.
The Vinegar Method – Mix two cups of lukewarm water with a tablespoon of white vinegar and a tablespoon of dishwashing liquid.
Step-4 – The Process
If you are using the salt method, you need to grab a little salt and sprinkle it all over the wet stain. Salt will draw out the liquid (red wine) from the fibres of the carpet. You should gently press the salt into the carpet and leave it for as long as you can. Better if you can leave the salt overnight or at least for the area to dry.
If you opted for the vinegar method, you need to dampen a white cloth in the vinegar mixture and dab the stain. You should have another white cloth to blot away the wine stain as you dampen the area with vinegar. Make sure you alternate between applying a little vinegar mixed with one white cloth while blotting away the wine stain with a dry white cloth.
Step-5 – The Final Step – Vacuuming The Carpet
Salt Method – After leaving the salt for some time on the stained area to work its magic, you will see the stain turning pink – where the salt absorbed the wine. Remove the salt as much as possible and throw it away before you use a vacuum to get rid of the excess saltiness. Your carpet will look much better by now. If the salt leaves the stained area a bit stiff, you should wet the area with a little cold water, let it dry, and vacuum once again.
Vinegar Method – Once the stain has faded away, you should use a new white cloth and some cold water to remove any excess vinegar mixture from the carpet. Next, use a dry cloth (white) to pat the area dry.
Success! The red wine stain should be gone by now. If you still see the stain on the carpet, you can repeat the process with your chosen method.
Note – Remember to spot test a less visible area of the carpet first. All carpets may not react to stain removal the same way.
